6G-DATADRIVEN-04 and 6G-EDGEDT-01 drive innovation in deterministic networking at the IETF 123 Hackathon

The 6G-DATADRIVEN-04 team, consisting of David Rico (UC3M), Carlos Barroso (UC3M), and Carlos J. Bernardos (UC3M), together with the 6G-EDGEDT-01 team, led by Pablo Picazo (UC3M), took part this weekend in the IETF 123 Hackathon, held in Madrid from July 19 to 25, 2025, in collaboration with the PREDICT-6G and DESIRE6G projects.

This hackathon is part of the international meeting of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which brings together experts from around the world to define the technical standards that shape the Internet.

Under the leadership of Carlos J. Bernardos, coordinator of the 6G-DATADRIVEN-04 project, the teams tackled two key challenges to advance the development of Deterministic Networking (DetNet): a control and intelligence API for DetNet, and in-band telemetry (INT), with both 6G-DATADRIVEN and 6G-EDGEDT involved in the former.

🔧 Challenge 1: Controller plane API and intelligence

A dynamic API based on REST/gRPC was developed to enable real-time configuration of DetNet nodes. This solution is complemented by a decision engine powered by artificial intelligence, capable of computing optimal paths based on service requirements (latency, reliability, etc.), replacing static configurations with a more flexible and automated approach.

📡 Challenge 2: In-band Telemetry (INT) for DetNet

The use of in-band telemetry (INT) was explored to monitor the performance of deterministic networks in real time. As part of the challenge, a dissector for Wireshark was designed, enabling direct analysis from the data plane.

The participation took place during the event’s opening weekend, alongside activities for new attendees and introductory sessions about the IETF ecosystem.

Through this collaborative work, 6G-DATADRIVEN-04 and 6G-EDGEDT-01 reinforce their commitment to research and the advancement toward smarter, more reliable, and deterministic 6G networks.
